Thursday May 15, 1:00pm [Nyamutora residence, Gweru, Zimbabwe ]

I think Fanny and Martha were interested in giving us a diversion after we had hit things pretty hard the past week, so it was decided that we would try to finish up what we could of the renovations this morning so that we could visit Antelope Park in the afternoon. So we finished what we were going to wallpaper while Aaron and Steve put the final coats of paint on the other walls and floor. Everything looks pretty nice and fresh.

Also, this morning Claudio worked on his special gourmet “fish dish”. I don’t remember the Brazilian name for it, but it was very tasty. He had to do it over an open wood fire outside so we got a nice smoke flavor as well.

Lots of onlookers for the event

Our normal cooks were just smiling and shaking their heads while he worked and called for various utensils and ingredients. It was quite the scene. Our cooks are Linnety, Sarudzai, Nyaradzo, and Etina (Martha’s sister), and sometimes Janet (a teacher)…plus Martha is in the midst of things too. Being able to provide jobs for people (even short-term) is an extraordinary privilege in this country.

So we all enjoyed the meal except Fanny who was busy running errands and Melissa who was still having her hair done.

We also exchanged U.S.$ for Zim $. $50 bought us about $12.2 billion Zim dollars. That was quite an experience since the bills were mostly 50 mil bills and even that creates quite a stack. Since most of us did not spend it for a few days, it lost quite a bit a value in just that short time.

Right now I’m sitting outside on the veranda – looking at my lesson and just relaxing before we leave. The temperature is perfect (as usual), the sky is partly cloudy, the birds are singing, the breeze is gentle, and the butterflies are congregating around the large, red poinsettas next to the outer wall.
