Saturday May 17, 13:00pm [ Kasimure, Zimbabwe ]
|
|
In the morning before we went back to Kasimure, David showed us some of his maize. It was full grown and the crop looked like it was getting try enough to harvest soon. They usually use combines, but he says that sometimes it gets picked by hand. Cotton is always harvested by hand. He is trying to get production levels up to where they were prior to 2002 per hector, but he has a ways to go. And we then we saw quite a bit of arable land that was not being utilized. There was a little irrigation being used in the area. I can see where that might be critical for dry seasons like the last one they had. I remember at the conference in one of the small thatched mud huts, some of the children were roasting kernels of maize over a fire and eating them hot right out of the pan. They offered me one – not bad! That is likely the best snack they have to look forward to.

It was another incredible day! So many students wanting my address…so many needs – Bibles, writing supplies, funds of course – I wish I could meet them. I wish I could remember all the faces. But I do have index cards from many of them now, and I was happy we were able to get a group picture this time. Like in other places we visited, many were interested in getting into a better school somewhere and some wanted to get into the ministry with more biblical training. The youth that came to Kasimure are beautiful in so many ways…walking miles to be there and then putting up with me today :-) I had my youth session while Rick finished up his lesson that he started yesterday. A few benches were found for us outside and I had the kids split up into five different clusters since that is the number of Bibles we could scrounge up. I think we had upwards of 50 kids though, probably ages 11 and up. I went through a variation of the mentoring lesion that I did for VBS the previous Saturday. The translator, pastor Isaac, helped immensely. Steve and Melissa also helped out since I had index cards and mechanical pencils to distribute again, and I wish I had brought more pencils. Since I let these kids keep the pencils, I’m sure that added to the address exchange that followed. Noel and Brian and several others were real highlights of my time there, and they provided helpful leadership to the other kids.

There was also more good singing and worship. This morning many women came forward for prayer and we prayed over them individually while the throng sang. They cannot hear our prayers because of the noise, but that is probably for the best. English is not their native language anyway.

We ate sadza and chicken the cooks had prepared before leaving after lunch. It was tasty! I guess Fanny contributed funds for three goats from some of the money we had sent so that was the other meat they were able to have over the two days they were gathered. And I believe some stayed another night to have Sunday worship before walking back to their homes. |
