Pit Stop

float transfer complete
now resting, gurgling up the glass …
wait, watch before sip, sip…
she is efficient, quick –
wash tables, straighten chairs…
“stayin’ right here a short bit, Flagstaff’s too hot”
the men eat quickly and leave quickly
except for the obese who pause
to take a leak first.
voice carries over the radio…wonkin'
outside a walker is removed from the car
he helps her out, situates her
but they too make a pit stop before
saddling up to the counter, causing
the grill girl to get called
back from breaking with friends.
heavily tattooed forearms scowling
thick pocket chain clinking -
contrasts with shapely frontline counterpart,
headset dangling down to an A&W chest.
chevrolets on the wall, it’s almost
surprising to glimpse one in the lot
but it leaves now, no match for the F250
idling at drive-thru.
the frontliner asks that he cut his engine –
it overpowers the intercom.
now quiet, sip, sip, drain, ahhhhhh…
